State-of-the-Art Diagnostics

We want to know the exact state of your state of oral health. Your new patient exam will include a series of leading-edge diagnostics that will provide us with a comprehensive understanding of your specific case.

Digital X-rays

We take low-radiation digital X-rays of your mouth to capture detailed views of your teeth, mouth and gums. Digital X-rays show us calculus buildup, tooth decay, bone loss, information about the state of your previous dental work and the condition of your root canals.

Digital X-rays to get an accurate view of the condition of your teeth.

3D Dental CT Scan

As needed, we take a 3D dental CT scan which give us a detailed view of your entire mouth in one single image. This provides us with information about your teeth, upper and lower jaws, sinuses, gums, and surrounding tissues.

Intraoral camera

Our intraoral camera is a small, handheld, pen-sized camera used to capture crisp magnified images of the interior of your mouth. The images are immediately displayed on a computer monitor in full-color, allowing you to see exactly what we see. This visual communication helps us explain what procedures may be needed.

Full series of digital photos

Digital photos of your face and smile provide reference material for treatment planning. They are also used to demonstrate the results of your dental work with “before” and “after” photos.

A full series of digital photos are taken for use in studying your smile.

Thorough Exam and Consultation

Dr. Kuhn reviewing digital x-rays with patient for preventative dentistry

Periodontal exam for gum disease

Our well-trained hygienists will check the depths of your gum pockets for signs of gum (periodontal) disease. Healthy gums have a pocket depth of up to three millimeters, and depths beyond four millimeters indicate periodontal disease.

Dr. Kuhn or Dr. Grimshaw will go over the results of the X-rays with you in a consultation.

You will next meet with the doctor, who will do an oral exam and go over your X-rays with you, explaining what they show.

Oral cancer screening

Although oral cancer is rare, we like to ensure your oral health by screening with an amazing new technology called VizLite®. We screen for cancer during each routine examination. The diagnostic process is quick and painless and it detects, identifies, and marks any tissue abnormalities, and is used in combination with visual exams.

Head and neck exam

The doctor will conduct an extraoral exam of your head and neck, and check the alignment of your bite (the way your teeth meet).

Treatment planning

The doctor will review the results of your examination with you and explain your options for treatment so that you may make well informed decisions about your dental care.
